NEW YORK, New York - Donald Trump has taken an early lead in the counting of votes in the U.S. presidential election.

With polls in some states still open, early counting has Trump picking up Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia. CNN and Fox News are projecting all three states will fall to Trump.

Hillary Clinton is projected by both networks to win Vermont.

Indiana is not a surprise as vice presidential candidate Mike Pence is governor there.

Florida, which Mr Trump concedes he needs to win to secure the presidency, has the Trump-Pence ticket in front although the lead has chopped and changed since counting began. Trump is also ahead in Georgia as we write.

“We’re going to win a lot of states,” Mr Trump told Fox News, overnight.

“Today is our independence day, today the American working class is going to strike,” The added, speaking from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Clinton, who is in North Carolina, said, “We have to bridge the divides in this country.”
